🇬🇧 ENGLISH

1. Есть — “there is / there are”

Anya uses есть several times to describe what is in her room:

В комнате есть кровать, стол, стул и шкаф.

“In the room there is a bed, a desk, a chair and a wardrobe.”

Здесь есть кухня, ванная и моя спальня.

“Here there is a kitchen, a bathroom and my bedroom.”

Есть is used when talking about the existence or presence of something. It does not change — it is the same for masculine, feminine, neuter, and plural.

When NOT to use есть: When you are describing a quality (not existence), есть disappears. Compare:

В комнате есть шкаф. — There is a wardrobe in the room. (existence)
Шкаф большой и удобный. — The wardrobe is big and comfortable. (description — no есть)

2. Стоит / лежит / висит — position verbs

Russian uses three different verbs depending on how an object is positioned. English just uses “is” for all three.

Verb Used for Example
стоит upright objects Справа стоит кровать.
лежит flat / horizontal objects На кровати лежат одеяло и подушка.
висит hanging objects На стене висит фотография.

These verbs agree with the subject in number: стоит/лежит/висит (singular) → стоят/лежат/висят (plural).

На столе стоят лампа и ноутбук, и лежат книги.

Quick rule: стоит = stands (furniture, objects on legs). лежит = lies (flat things: books, blankets, papers). висит = hangs (pictures, clothes on hooks, curtains).

3. Prepositional case — location

To say where something is located, Russian uses the prepositional case after prepositions в (in) and на (on).

Nominative Prepositional Example
шкаф (m.) в шкафу́ В шкафу — моя одежда.
стол (m.) на столе́ На столе стоят лампа и ноутбук.
кровать (f.) на крова́ти Тима спит на кровати.
стена (f.) на стене́ На стене висит фотография.
этаж (m.) на этаже́ Квартира на втором этаже.
Pattern: masculine nouns → ending -е or -у (шкаф → шкафу). Feminine nouns → ending -и or -е (кровать → кровати, стена → стене). This is one of the most useful cases for everyday description.

4. Справа / слева / рядом с — position adverbs

Anya describes the layout of her room using position adverbs:

Справа стоит моя кровать. — On the right is my bed.

Слева стоит стол. — On the left is the desk.

Рядом с кроватью стоит шкаф. — Next to the bed is the wardrobe.

Note: рядом с is followed by the instrumental case: кровать → кроватью.

Useful for describing any space: справа, слева, рядом с, напротив (opposite), перед (in front of), за (behind). These are the building blocks for describing a room, a city, or directions.
🇫🇷 FRANÇAIS

— L’armoire est grande et pratique. (description — pas de есть)

2. Стоит / лежит / висит — les verbes de position

Le russe utilise trois verbes différents selon la position d’un objet. Le français utilise simplement « être » pour les trois.

Verbe Utilisé pour Exemple
стоит objets verticaux Справа стоит кровать.
лежит objets plats / horizontaux На кровати лежат одеяло и подушка.
висит objets suspendus На стене висит фотография.

Ces verbes s’accordent en nombre : стоит/лежит/висит (singulier) → стоят/лежат/висят (pluriel).

Règle rapide : стоит = debout (meubles, objets sur pieds). лежит = allongé (objets plats : livres, couvertures, papiers). висит = suspendu (tableaux, vêtements sur crochets, rideaux).

— À droite se trouve mon lit.

Слева стоит стол. — À gauche se trouve le bureau.

Рядом с кроватью стоит шкаф. — À côté du lit se trouve l’armoire.

Note : рядом с est suivi du cas instrumental : кровать → кроватью.

Utile pour décrire n’importe quel espace : справа, слева, рядом с, напротив (en face), перед (devant), за (derrière). Ce sont les blocs de base pour décrire une chambre, une ville ou donner des directions.
